NEW SENSATIONS
New Sensations was launched in 2007 by Channel 4 and The Saatchi Gallery to find the most exciting and imaginative artistic talent in the UK. The competition is open to all art students graduating from BA and MA courses at UK colleges and universities in 2008. These students have entered work from their 2008 degree shows via Saatchi Online.
The judges for the 2008 competition are: artist Yinka Shonibare MBE, Maureen Paley, the founder of the London gallery, Maureen Paley, critic and broadcaster Matthew Collings, and David Roberts, collector and founder of Gallery One One One in London.
An exhibition of 20 shortlisted artists, including four finalists chosen by the judges, will take place at The Truman Brewery, Brick Lane in London during Frieze Week in October. The four finalists of the competition will be given a £1000 bursary to make a new work to present at the exhibition, and each of these 'New Sensations' will have a 3 Minute Wonder Channel 4 film made about them which will be aired in October. There will be two winners of the New Sensations 2008 competition. One will be decided upon by a public web vote hosted on the New Sensations site. The second will be chosen by the panel of judges who will select a winner from the four completed new commissions made by the four finalists of the competition. The judges' winner will be awarded £3000 as prize money, and the winner chosen by the public will receive £1000.
The 4 New Sensations exhibition will take place at the Old Truman Brewery, T2 Space, 91 Brick Lane, London E1 6QL, and will be open to the public from 15-19 October, 11am-6pm. The exhibition is free.
