SARAH MAPLE WINS CHANNEL 4 ART PRIZE
Channel 4 and the Saatchi Gallery announced today the winner of 4 New Sensations, a new competition for 2007 STUART graduates. The winner, chosen by a public vote, is Sarah Maple. She will receive prize money of £3000. The works by Marcus Lanyon and Mark Melvin have been acquired by the Zabludowicz Collection; Mie Olise Kjaergaard's work has been bought by a private collector; and Sarah Maple's work will become part of Channel 4's art collection, Art4.
4 New Sensations art competition was launched by Channel 4 and The Saatchi Gallery in April this year. 4 New Sensations is a brand new art prize instigated to find the most imaginative and talented artists graduating in the UK.
Through STUART, all BA and MA students were invited to submit work from their degree shows and ideas based on the simple but expansive premise: The World In 25 Years.
The Saatchi Gallery and Channel 4 decided on a shortlist of 20 students from the hundreds of entries, and a panel of judges then chose their favourite four artists from this shortlist. The judges were artist Antony Gormley, Tim Marlow, the broadcaster and Director of Exhibitions at White Cube gallery, Anita Zabludowicz, co-founder of the Zabludowicz Collection, Sadie Coles, founder of the London gallery Sadie Coles HQ, and Kevin Lygo, Channel 4's Director of Television and Content.
An exhibition of all twenty finalists was held at The Truman Brewery Brick Lane to coincide with Frieze art Fair this year (10 - 14th October 2007). It was held in partnership with Phillips de Pury & Company and sponsored by Coutts, 176 /Zabludowicz Collection and Tiger Aspect Productions.
