Marcus Lanyon (31 years old. Born in United Kingdom. Lives in: London) Royal College of Art
Marcus Lanyon utilises a hybrid language of materials to create a 'seductive disquiet'; a simultaneous sense of attraction and repulsion. Themes of mortality, preservation, innocence and violence create narratives that are contemporary and ancient, familiar yet subversive. Like scenes from a fairytale or a chilling dream, the work lures us in only to quietly lift a knife to our back.

Work of art I would like to make
The world in 25 years time; well, I’ll be 50, and perhaps all our fears will have come to fruition – genetic engineering run rampant, infertility and global warming, religious extremism and water wars, all of us a quivering mess crying about how it shouldn’t be like this. However, it may just work out fine. This ‘age of panic’ will frame the work I create – a wood of trees (numbering seven), all lovingly hand bound (mummified and preserved) to keep it just how it should be; however of course, it is completely obscured by the act of keeping it safe. Playing amongst this ‘Eden’, a group of mummified children share a picnic, whilst another reaches for the glistening fruit dangling from the trees, itself also manically locked in time. An ostensibly idyllic scene, rendered impotent and alarming through the act of attempting to preserve our beloved state and ways of living; a warning perhaps, or a simple reminder to enjoy it while it lasts. |
