Graduating from Leeds University in 2008 with a 1st Class BA in Contemporary Art Practice, I am now working towards an MA in Fine Art at Wimbledon College of Art. My work questions the role of the artist as an anthropologist, engaging in dialogues with scholars, explorers and general enthusiasts whilst exhaustively researching popular subjects such as the sinking of the Titanic, and the 2012 end of world prophecies. Work of art I would like to make

This July I will be traveling to Santiago, Chile, from where I will fly over 600 km aboard a 6 seater plane to Robinson Crusoe Island (part of the Juan Fernandez archipelago). On this island in 1996, a Canadian explorer located a 150 ft megalithic monument supposedly erected by the ancient Mayan civilization; research has concluded that this will be the only vantage point in the Western hemisphere where one will be able to witness both the transit of Venus across the Sun on June 6th 2012, and – 160 days later on November 13th 2012 – a total solar eclipse signalling the end of the Great Mayan Calendar which has popularly been interpreted as being symbolic of the end of the world as we know it.

On July 11th, I will watch a partial solar eclipse from this monument, and will return with documentation in order to create a body of work. The pieces that I am looking to create will be similar to my previous work but will be directly inspired by this experience: I cast resin on to wood panels, in to which I etch an image and paint oil bar on to similar to the way one would apply it to an etching plate. Areas of colour are added using oil paint and thickened linseed oil to give a high gloss finish. I will also be developing a process that uses various additives in the resin to replicate the stone on the Island.
