My premise is to put perception into question through exploring the second extreme of scale; the miniature. The subject of the work consists of abstract forms measuring no more than five centimeters in height crafted with a meticulous attention akin to that of a medieval goldsmith. These three-dimensional objects are then subjected to both two- and three- dimensional optical illusion which confuses both locale and context. Gro ...[more]

Work of art I would like to make

Most recently I have produced a series of immersive installations that seek to create a ‘minumental’ experience by disrupting the trajectory of projected images. Should I be chosen as a finalist, I would like to take the key elements of these ventures (projection and reflection)in order to create a three-dimensional optical illusion that challenges and primes a viewer’s capacity to ‘perceive’ visually.

Realising the impracticalities of building an enclosed room in which to create such a ‘minumental’ experience for Sensations, I would instead like to create a free-standing light contraption. The central part of the object would be a large oval band (measuring between 100cm and 50cm in diameter) made from steel and attached to the ceiling with four wires. Lying horizontally, it would hover approximately 70cm above the floor. The space between the band would be filled with material suitable for back-projection. A lattice of wire will be attached to the band, from which iridescent glass rectangles measuring approximately 5 x 8cm would be strung appearing convex in form. A slideshow of ambiguous photographs, similar in content to those in the ‘minumental series’, will be projected onto an oval mirror placed at 45 degrees under the glass. The resultant reflection and diffraction of light, constantly changing, will deconstruct then disperse the images. I envisage the flow of light on the oval screen, now only a semblance of a representational image, to appear as if a ruptured camera obscura. In effect, a free-standing indeterminable space will be created within the gallery walls.
