This series of work transforms discarded old photographs into paintings in the hope of resurrecting the subjects within them. The source photographs either show a moment that has been interrupted by the intervention of the camera, or are highly staged photographic portraits where the individual is posing to portray not who they are but who they would like to be. In both cases the fact that the subjects are looking into a camera is important. The reciprocal gaze is vital as it creates a dialogue between the sitter in the piece and the viewer. When painting I always intend to create an objective depiction of the subject. However at the same time I am aware that every decision I make as the painting progresses modifies the meaning of the original image.
