Judy Carroll Deeley (56 years old. Born in Ireland. Lives in: Dublin) NCAD
My paintings reflect the quest for home. I make interiors that hint at our ambiguous feelings towards home as a flawed and transitory space. I am a painter now but in the past I have worked as a housing welfare officer - the home has always been foremost in my heart and mind. My paintings explore this 'great indoors' where most of the events of our lives, humdrum and extraordinary, take place.

Work of art I would like to make
Interior space motivates my work, interiority that is both physical and psychological. To me the complex nature of home - with its dual effects of nurture and oppression - reflects our tenuous and problematic existence in the world. I make images evoking this dynamic, the effect of the domestic environment and the lived experience.
I want to bring the domestic interior to the forefront in contemporary painting as I feel it has been a neglected genre in the history of art. Everyone has a unique experience of home, a concept that has changed radically since the middle ages and will see a lot further transformation over the next 25 years. I want to challenge the viewer with this transformation with each new painting and evolution in style, and remind the wider public that our homes are more than built environments. |
