I have recently graduated from BA Art at Reading university with a 1st class degree. I adopt a self-reflexive apporoach towards art making and through a critical synthesis of appropriation, decontextualisation and reconfiguration of material available to me within the field of art, I am able to infiltrate and act within the exhibition space and the less tangible sphere of art theory and criticism. Work of art I would like to make
I would like to create an extension of the Spur Gallery project by curating the other chosen artists' work, in the style that I have done previously as part of my degree show. This concept would be presented tangibly as a gallery lobby style space in which several computers would display a newly created gallery website, available for viewers to interact with, as well as press release handouts available for the viewer to take away. The process of creating this 'gallery' would involve brief interviews with the other participating artists in order to find out about there work enable me to do a critical write up for each artist and create/curate a new Group show concept. The actual content of writing itself will be drawn from an array of press releases, some of which I already own, some of which I would pick up from exhibitions up until and at the time of exhibiting. I believe that the new media/website aspect of this work would resonate well with the theme as the world (including the world of art) is becoming more and more ingrained into the digital age and way of thinking. Viewing art on a computer is something that is likely to be a familiar sight in 25 years time and reflects the positive aspect of the sharing of ingformation that is increasingly popular. The manipulative nature of the piece also reflects the negative aspect of technology and its potential to create a dystopian future where human inter-relations are obselete and minds are not free to form there own opinions and beliefs. The most interesting aspect of this project for me is whether the information I present via these all too familiar formats will influence the thoughts and opinions of the viewers or motivate a rebelious action for free thought and reinvigorate peoples' relationship with art. |
