Natasha Conway (28 years old. Born in Ireland. Lives in: Dublin) The National College of Art and Design
My name is Natasha Conway, I am 25 and a recent graduate of The National College of Art and Design,Dublin. This body of work is the result of an ongoing enquiry into painting, its history and its validity as a form of communication today. Painting for me is about asking questions. Each work is the record of a thought process where intuition is given priority, working towards an unknown result. The nature of the painting process itself is a key area of interest. Work is deliberately unresolved in a traditional sense, hovering on the verge of 'becoming', in order to establish an immediacy between the perceptual processes of making and of viewing and in turn to reflect the uncertainties and fragility that I feel are characteristic of the contemporary. Although separate works have similarities, each is a separate exploration. My interest in the Art of the past is visible, ranging from early Icons to the Analytical Cubists through to contemporary abstract painting. The emphasis for me is not on creating a dichotomy between abstraction and figuration, rather to create a more fluid, complex space, one that functions with its own internal logic as a tangible, physical thing, yet is deeply rooted in the world of experience,’ The juncture where abstraction meets the world'- Schjedal. Ultimately I view painting as a space for reflection and a slower viewing experience.

Work of art I would like to make
My next body of work will continue this enquiry into the painting process. I aim to continue to 'research through making' and deliberately keep my work in flux, maintaining a dialogue between Art history, personal experience and the painting process. Through challenging my own ideas of resolve and 'completion' I aim to make works which pose open ended questions rather than concrete statements, challenging myself and in turn the viewer to engage in an act of prolonged looking.
