With ninety quid tins of silicone rubber, a large melting vat, buckets of superfine plaster and brilliant technical advice, I was able to make whatever sculpture I wanted in Chelsea’s fantastic workshops. Now, workshop-less and counting my coppers I am replacing the traditional sculptural materials with more rudimentary resources. Running parallel to my workshop-less predicament is how my ‘have, have, have’ Noughtie generation has been catapulted into economic crisis. Now, our quaint second hand memory of Granny darning socks is now a haunting reality. Handing most men and women a thread and needle is much like handing them a slide-rule instead of a calculator!
The Noughtie era has been an age which appears to offer women their sexual identity flat-packed for quick and easy assemblage, in turn promising fun loving no strings attached empowerment. Against this Noughtie backdrop my work suggests a girl who, for whatever reason cannot obtain this easy identity from the high street. Instead she pours her heart into making her own empowering objects, singing crowns, IKEA busts, Sex in the City shoes and rubber masks. Despite her attempts Noughtie slander is thrown at her crafty amateur version of Noughtie empowerment and she is written off as nothing more than anti-sexual and un-liberated. In a short story that I am currently writing the main girl receives applauds for her aspiration, her profound engagement with materials, process and creativity and yet is mocked by her Sex and the City poster; ‘Get a life’. But to view my work the story of the girl does not need to be known as the empowering objects become the main protagonists in her soul-searching tale.

Work of art I would like to make
The Noughtie girl is a risqué teasing minx who updates her soul online the morning after whilst using her knickers as her weapon to smite anyone who challenges her way of life. Using a mish mash of low tech materials I intend to disrupt this mass produced Noughtie Girl by constructing well crafted objects. I also want to experiment with sound and motors; a dismembered torso precariously turns on her stand with what seems like sweet muffled gibberish from a distance. However up close her message is clear and disturbing ‘My mission is to spread the viral condition of self love for no reason, the epidemic condition of a woman adoring herself just because she can… just because she’s incandescent, just because she’s a woman’.
In my work I want to reveal a rich exuberance in improbable ways.
