Work of art I would like to make
According to Sufi teachings, for the real self to be revealed there must be a death of the ego, and this can be experienced through states or stations, which have been identified and documented over the centuries. I have been concerned with the mortality and the ephemeral, which obviously refers to physical death, but can be seen as a metaphor for the death of the ego.
My degree show ‘Die before you die’ reflects the absurdity of the human condition. I now want to focus on our need to improve ourselves, to uncover the essential and our longing for transformation.
I would like to continue working with found objects and materials and referencing body parts and to introduce imaginary elements in a way that I can’t do with sculpture. Using the forms I have made as a starting point for a series of drawings and montages, and with a view to animation, to explore the sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, sad or ecstatic states of human transformation.
