Christabel Mitchell
(23 years old. Born in United Kingdom. Lives in: Keighley)
University of Huddersfield

I have just finished my BA (Hons) in Fine Art. My work investigates the notion of space; in particular, it deals with themes of occupation and invasion, through using the medium of drawing. The drawings explore the idea of using traditional mediums for drawing, as well as testing out more unconventional drawing methods such as my wall drawing (‘Unknown’) made from paper circles, thus allowing the drawings to exist beyond t ...[more]

Work of art I would like to make

My work looks into issues of urbanization such as the increasing growth of cities and one of the issues I would like to investigate further into my work is the notion of dominance (to reflect the dominant nature of cities). I have explored this through scale, such as the relationship between the scale of the drawing and the scale of the paper. Using the traditional medium of drawing as a metaphor for how the world could look in 25 years, I would like to create a large wall drawing using the simple medium of graphite, choosing this medium to signify the dull, raw and industriousness of cities. The invasion of space is a key theme of my work, and the wall drawing, with its repetitive mark making, will be transformed into a complex fragmented and ambiguous drawing, spreading, growing and sprawling on the wall like a virus with no boundaries, and furthermore, creating a sense of chaos. The drawing will be a development from my degree show work, therefore resembling characteristics from ‘Untitled 1’ (which is map like in nature) and ‘Unknown’.
