My work fuses an innate fascination with the natural world and natural processes, which I believe is inherent to the human condition, with the digital processes that have become standard tools for artistic expression. An enthusiasm for the clues left on an image as to its process of production, reflects an interest in conceptual and aleatoric methodology.

Work of art I would like to make

The piece I would make as a finalist is an interactive installation examining the natural world through digital technologies.

The piece would consist of projected imagery, a falconer’s glove and perch. A bird of prey is projected onto a wall so that it seems to be sat on the perch, quietly surveying the gallery space. The viewer is invited to place their hand in the glove, triggering the bird to fly from its perch and land on the glove.

A monitor could be used to display live footage of the event to the glove-bearer. This disconnection could heighten the illusion that the viewer is sharing the same space as the predator. Invoking sensations of fear and awe often experienced through encounters with wild animals.

Presenting a natural subject using digital processes would reference the extent to which our day-to-day experiences are filtered through or consumed via pixels.

Falconry is an ancient activity traditionally used to hunt. Using this as a starting point the work questions the increasing role of technologies in the production, sale and distribution of food to the public.

The piece envisages a future where the development of videogame technologies and web-based grocery shopping causes increasing alienation between the natural world and urbanites.
