My work explores ideas of the ego within art, the artist’s role in contemporary society, the parameters of success, failure and the insecurities of the artist within a world increasingly detached from the modernist genius-hero ideal. In order to discuss these issues I adopt the role of the painter. The works act as the apparatus in an ongoing performance, in which the viewer becomes a participant. The work can be viewed in the past tense; as anecdotal, the residue of an act of artistic struggle, or maverick brilliance. In the present, as an ongoing performance; the viewer is asked to buy into the fiction, thus further strengthening its mythology. Or as a future event, the works are props, stored and ready for a future performance.

Work of art I would like to make
The works will combine to create a space in which a personal mythology will be played out. Combining romanticism, ideas of the avant-garde and maverick aspirations with failure, humour and irony. Balancing sincerity with performance to question the position of the ego within art, and the artist within contemporary society. |
