I paint things that open up a new space inside the surface of the canvas. I use this secondary surface as a platform for my ideas. As I become caught amongst unfamiliar settings, I find myself placing objects and things into these spaces as a way of making something happen. I like to see the surface change as I paint. It reveals something organic and natural. If I make a mistake, I rub away at the surface, and try painting it ...[more]

Work of art I would like to make

I’m trying to picture another painting in my mind. Sometimes it’s hard to make it out straight away. It’s unclear at first. It feels like opening my eyes when I wake up, and looking at the cracks on the ceiling as they become clearer.

I think of the first time that I watched the Mad Max movies as a child, and how they were based on the frighteningly fateful future of the world, and its survival. I remember the landscapes. Nature seemed to have given up on them. I remember it looking so empty, deserted, and venerable. I think of a painting in my mind. I think of objects and constructions falling in on themselves. I stand and watch the paint as it attempts to hold everything together.

I will paint more of the spaces and settings that reveal a new platform for me to explore the intrusion of an unfamiliar construction or architectural space, and the interaction between man-made and natural resources. I want to feel as though I am inside these odd places, causing things to change, and happen as i paint. A solid structure may become more un-stable over time, and appear as though it is about to change or re-form into something else. The surface will not only be a representation of somewhere discovered through the painting. It will also make reference to the materiality of the surface, through the way I use the paint, and how I go about selecting content, and applying colour.
