The violence of the firearm belongs to the male.
The aesthetics of that violence can belong to the female.
The intention of the collection of work ‘Girls with Guns’ is to try to rephrase perception of a shotgun, its duality of purpose: tool versus weapon and its preconceived gender specificity.
Taking a still image of the barrels, then repeating it to form patterns which were, to some, initially unrecognizable as the original barrels shape, the intention is to create a conflict between the seductive image and the severity of the object itself.

Work of art I would like to make
The collection of work 'Girls with guns' responds to a glamorization of violence present within modern society. The world in 25 years time will still respond to the same violent gestures, and representations of this violence will still be reflected in the media. For these reasons I would continue with the themes represented in my original submission, producing seductive images and environments using a hand printing technique.
The work would evolve, because my installations respond to the architecture of the space they inhabit the work often evolves from the space, changing pattern size, colour, print size.
Part of the main submission picture which is not shown is an installation of used shotgun shells, the artwork I would make if I was chosen would respond to the architecture of the space, and future works would also do this, perhaps forming patterns on the floor. |
