Lisa Robinson
(23 years old. Born in United Kingdom. Lives in: Leeds)
Manchester Metropolitian University

Hovering between abstraction and figuration, my work is an exploration of the physicality of paint and the possibilities of what can be achieved with space and colour. Each element plays a vital role in the creation of a painting.

Work of art I would like to make

No one can predetermine what the world will be like in 25 years time; scientists cannot predict a weather forecast for tomorrow accurately, so who can say what the world would be like in the future? Will there even be a world? Will we all succumb to the effects of global warming? Will there be a pandemic? Or will the world be destroyed by an asteroid? This notion of uncertainty and ambiguity is a theme within my own work as an end result is not preconceived. There is constantly a sense of uneasiness and discomfort whilst painting as one incorrect move could ruin everything. Nevertheless, this sense of uneasiness provides a drive for my practice as when the end result is successful it provides a sense of fulfilment and satisfaction. A new canvas would ultimately go through these same emotions. The painting would begin the moment the canvas is stretched; a blank canvas provides excitement due to the endless possibilities. The paint would be poured, splashed and spattered onto the canvas and the resulting forms would provide inspiration to place other elements on top of this painterly surface. I would then continue by placing forms which interact with the other shapes that have preceded it and selecting the colour to compliment or contradict the values and saturations in the composition. The resulting composition may allude to a peculiar, future reality, where forms will balance upon others, or strange objects appear awkwardly, which seem to have little relevance to the surrounding area.
