The photographs in Tower (2008-9) were made inside several rooms within an institutional building. The idea behind the project was to engage with the space by way of an empirical strategy: through observation, experience and experiment. This self-contained environment offered functional material for experimentation, with its utilitarian, mass-produced furnishings.
The title of the work highlights the sculptural and vertical aspects of the images and points at the enclosed nature of the institution. Each photograph is built on opposites: the practical furniture/ the unreasonable constructions, tonal coldness/ sensual shapes and textures, motion/ non-event.
As a successive depiction of piles, voids, flattened perspectives and emphasised spatial planes, this work was designed to feel both contained and unstable, suggesting that vertigo might be experienced within the confines of an ordinary space.
