Gray's School of Art
My work is concerned with our interactions with technology and the way the Internet acts as an instant provider of gratification for a whole generation. I use humour and irony to ask questions. I start with a central idea and basic structure, but creation introduces its own shifts, tangents, complexities and connections. My work is always emotional and is a reflection of my experience which I presume is much the same as anyone else’s experience. Significantly it’s never quite what I want it to be, there’s always something more to be said – and consequently the need to create something else.

Work of art I would like to make
My work looks at the effect of the Internet on society, now and in the immediate future. In twenty five years, if things continue at their exponential growth, we will be unable to function without recourse to the Internet. The void between those who have and those who have not will become even greater. Childhood will cease to exist – their will only be adults and near-adults. Young people will see surgery as a right of passage at ever increasingly younger ages. Overcrowding will become the norm and private space will disappear. Pornography will become accepted and commonplace.
My proposed art work will look at these ephemeral children and their obsession with beauty and the constant need to reinvent themselves. I will draw on mixed media sources to create a series of wrapped figures, each representing a possible future outcome. As the result of a process of evolution and self discovery the final outcome of my work is unknown, but it will make us ask questions about the direction society is taking.
