Central St Martins College of Art
Origionally from Russia, I am a recent graduate of BA Graphic Design from Central St Martins. I have specialised in illustration, but early into the course I knew that with my work I was delving much more into fine art - where my passion has remained. I use a multidisciplinary approach to try to communicate those human emotions and experiences that lie outside of common discourse.
The project I am displaying is an ongoing project in which I have looked at the human extreme of mania. I attempted to find a metaphor through which to communicate all the aspects of my research - which i found in the structure of the rams horn. I made a mask based on this structure to show the interplay between the individual and the manic drive. The mask represents a muting of the self; the manic drive takes over the individual and obliterates autonomy. The spiral shape, potentially infinite, represents the loss of perspective which accompanies mania or obsession. The rams horn also echoes the carnal/primal nature of these emotions.

Work of art I would like to make
My proposal is to continue this investigation into mania - expanding it, but moving away from my shown work. I would like the opportunity to create a series of sculptural works made from materials i have never been able to work with before, such as metals, wood and wax, echoing the aesthetic of Louise Bourgeois. I would like to look at and explore metaphor for the following themes:
the gulf between melancholy and mania
mania as an artistic strategy
the consumption of the individual within the manic drive - the loss of self
I would this to culminate is a series of sculptural works that interact with the body - which can exist on their own as part of an exhibition, or on a more interactive level. |
