To animate the otherwise dull and stationary components of everyday life and make them extraordinary is what I have been chasing for the last year or so. I use lights, specifically, not in their usual functional way, but as physical components, showing off their properties by making them kiss and touch, move and swing or rub themselves over other materials. Work of art I would like to make
I would like to make a work that is beautifully simple, which gives a wink to Dan Flavin and Frank Stella, and a nod to Conrad Shawcross, whilst at the same time having a tender and emotional charge, almost erotic and seductive in its hypnotizing repetition and tension inducing ability because of its apparent imminent collapse. I would try to produce something that made the viewer think of their own bodies when they encounter the painful yet sexual repetition of the work. I think that it would be important to make more than one piece of work, as the relationships formed between the kinetic pieces are now incredibly vital to my practice. I would propose to build curiously moving objects, with a real sadness and sense of failure about them, whilst trying to alter the scale which I have become too comfortable with. The repetition of these functionless lights fascinate me, and I would like to make a piece of work which upped the complexity of movement whilst somehow retaining the intimacy and eroticism. In 25 years time, normal incandescent bulbs will no longer be available because they are not environmentally friendly, and these are one of my main components as I love how they look and feel and often contemplate the work around their properties, so making a work of art which highlights their imminent demise would not only be extremely topical, but cause me to rethink how I approach an idea for a work. |
