I'm interested in the legacy of abstraction and its uneasy relationship with appropriation and the death of painting. Often the works begin with a borrowed element, such as a motif from a Frank Stella painting or Rodchenko poster design - these elements are then edited so as not to be direct quotations, and act more as a framework for an intuitive approach. I'm interested in a trade-off between different modes of painting - pre-determination and improvisation, theft and invention, fragmentation and resolution.

Work of art I would like to make
I have recently been making paintings with a large number of adjustments built up in the surface. The final picture is victim to 'interference' from earlier images. I would like to think that the corrections and re-workings present in the paintings, not only act as a barometer for an amount of uncertainty in the actual making process, but can also act as a metaphor for the unstable place abstraction and abstract painting has in contemporary art. I intend to make a series of these paintings. The works will be connected by their built up and over-worked surfaces, but the rationale of how they come into being, allows me to pull in a whole range of 'disparate' images, as well as materials in the surface. |
