Somewhere, six feet below this world, there is a long dead maths teacher spinning in his grave and laughing. He laughs because it has only taken fifty years for his patient teaching of geometry to come to fruition. The penny has dropped, the light bulb flashes, my Damascus moment – geometry is fun! I don’t like carte blanche. I like structure and rules. I like breaking rules, I like rattling the structure, I lick the envelope. The rules of geometry are the rules of the universe. Geometry is life. I love life.

Work of art I would like to make
History teaches us that things usually turn out okay in the end. In twenty five years time the planet will be hotter or colder or about the same; diseases will be cured and others will arise; commerce will still play on our fears and anxieties, it’s what makes the money go round; we will still be seeking security in our superstitions; we will still not have enough income; science will continue to amaze us and millions will still believe in ‘The Creation’; the Rolling Stones will still be touring.
But being the wondrous human creatures that we are, we will, as we have always done, prevail. No matter what changes occur we will still be trying to work out the meaning of life an’ all that. We will still want to gather together and tell each other stories and have our breath taken away by the inventions of art, because each work of art is a story. The tales will have been told a million times but it is how they are told that counts. It’s what makes us human.
If I were to be a chosen one in this competition (and even if not) I will continue my degree show work of exploring geometric forms and structures. With steel and stone and paper I will enthral you. The beautiful stories of form and structure my old maths teacher instilled in my subconscious will live on, yea even beyond the year 2033.
