In it's fourth year, The Cork Street Open Exhibition is held in Mayfair, London. The purpose of the Exhibition is to provide an opportunity for both emerging and establish artists from around the world to gain exposure and sell their work while benefiting a selected charity. The 2011 charity is PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide, a national UK charity dedicated to the prevention of suicide and the promotion of positive mental health and emotional well being in young people. The dates for this years Open Exhibition are 4-12 August 2011. The Exhibition will expand for the second time in as many years and will be held in 2 of Cork Street's premier galleries: The Gallery in Cork Street and Gallery 27, in the heart of London's art world. Terms & Conditions Any artist living anywhere in the world may enter. All work must be original, conceived and executed solely by the artist (with the exception of casts or other foundry production), and completed since January 2010. All media except reproductions, film and video are eligible for exhibition. Work cannot exceed 60in (152cm) in any direction (inclusive of packing if coming from abroad) or 75 lbs. in weight. There will be no provision for work requiring special installation. There is a limit of six entries per artist. Over the past 3 years the judges have stated that they find it easier to choose work by artists they have seen several entries from, as opposed to single entries. Therefore, in order to encourage multiple submissions, which are clearly to an artists' advantage, the fees for entries subsequent to the first submission have been reduced. The 2011 fees for online entries are: £20 for the first submission, and £12 for each additional entry, £18 for the first young artist (under 22 years) submission, and £8 for each additional entry. The RAVE Workshop is part of the first edition of the RAVE East Village Artist Residency, a residency program for artists hosted in a traditional old farm-house in the heart of the Friuli countryside, the Pasolini north east of Italy. The workshop, produced with the support and cooperation of the City of Trivignano Udinese, will last three days and will be open to young artists living in Europe. The initiative is sponsored by: project leader Associazione Culturale LʼOfficina, Comitato Trieste Contemporanea-Dialoghi con l'Arte dell'Europa Centro Orientale, Associazione Culturale Hope, Associazione Culturale Etrarte, Altevie Technologies. The objective of the workshop is to give young people the opportunity to interact with great international artists, as well as a chance to exchange ideas and experiences with other young people from different backgrounds and training. The RAVE East Village Artist Residency program, created by Isabella Pers and Tiziana Pers, will invite a number of prominent artists to live and work in a farmhouse located in rural Trivignano Udinese. The artist in residence for the RAVE Workshop 2011 is ADRIAN PACI. He will hold a workshop on the 10th, 11th and12th of June, 2011. He will freely decide the nature of the workshop, the methods and approaches. A committee of experts will select 12 Europen artists from those who have applied for the program. 6 places will be reserved for artists from Friuli Venezia Giulia. Participation in the workshop is free and hospitality costs will be covered by the organization. The food will be vegetarian and accommodation is provided for participants coming from outside the region. Travel expenses must be covered by individual participants. At the end of the workshop participants will be invited to present a project based on their experiences during the event. For organisational reasons all materials that the 12 artists wish to submit must be received by August 20, 2011. The material received will be exhibited at the event “Immaginare il tempo” (Imagining time) which will be held in the historic village of Clauiano on the 24/25th September 2011. All documentation must be sent no later than April 30, 2011 WORKSHOP THEME The changing of natural and urban spaces is directly related to culture and social habits. How is it still possible to experience this of as a complete perception of the present, of space and of the lives which are lived there? And how can art address a transient reality and find a relationship with reality which is different from the evermore over-excited conventional images we give it? Animals live in the place where the workshop will be held. These have been saved from the food industry through artistic actions, removed from consumerist mechanisms to be welcomed and cared for in a more natural context. In this sense, the perspective which underlies the residency is also permeated by the personal and professional relationship that ties the artists Isabella and Tiziana Pers to the place where it is held. The farmhouse itself is located in a small village in Friuli, in a rural environment, far from large urban centres. As such the artists will be able to interact with the natural physicality of an environment where one can still perceive the origins and stratifications. Furthermore, after the removal of the borders in the EU enlargement process, Friuli Venezia Giulia, in the extreme eastern Italy, has acquired a new dimension that has led to the area becoming a conduit linking the east and west. This is a channel that has absorbed many influences throughout its history. The theme is intended as a starting point and the artists will be free to investigate the different aspects and interpretations of it in the manner they feel is most appropriate. The purpose of the workshop is to ensure that all participants have the opportunity to experience a different modus vivendi in order to create new ideas and reflections. Instead of windows, black holes are staring out of the walls. But very often the architecture of elapsed eras is attractive and astonishing. In combination with the emptiness and beginning decay, such places often spread the impression of a dream world. Decay and nature give new structures to strictly geometric forms and lines, e.g. in production halls. Moisture, moss and rust give new colors to gray halls. Trilobite Project invites you to travel to Cuernavaca city in State of Morelos Mexico, where the sun, the light and color make possible the creation. Enrolment to our Artist Residencies Program 2011 are opened. Oriented to visual artists, the Artist Residencies Program provides a space and the necessary infrastructure in order that the participants carry out their projects; considering that this type of exchanges makes possible their work enrichment by means of the encounter with other artists of their same discipline, getting closer to another type of experiences, as well as knowing other perspectives of the artistic task. The Walsh Gallery at Seton Hall University is seeking submissions for a group exhibition curated by Ruth Ballester, Whitney Fehl, and Lauren Thompson. Portraiture: Inside Out seeks to emphasize the methods by which contemporary artists explore private identity of both the self and the other by denying formal and art historical conventions, as well as moving away from lofty social and political tendencies. The Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary 2010-11 is open for entries. The bursary, now in its fourth year, is available to mid-career disabled artists working in the field of visual arts. This year’s winner will be given £5,000 and a three month residency at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead. The bursary has firmly established itself as one of the most significant commissioning opportunities for disabled artists in the UK. Applications are welcomed both from disabled artists who work in a disability or deaf arts context, and from those whose work is not focused on their disability. The annual bursary was set-up in memory of Adam Reynolds, to provide time, space and support for artists to develop their ideas without the pressure to deliver a particular outcome. Adam Reynolds (1959-2005) was a sculptor, curator, teacher and arts advisor. Adam was active in the disability arts sector and generous in his support for other artists, the bursary is offered in the same spirit in which Adam lived and worked. World-renowned sculptor Antony Gormley is patron of the Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary. Gormley says, “Adam was inspirational as an artist and a man – seeing his disability as a strength. Call for submissions “Baasher Ghor” translates as Bamboo House in Bengali. This is a call for architects, designers, artists, craftspeople and writers to submit projects and artwork involving bamboo as a material in the context of space, an interior or narrative journey with an attached significance to a place, either in the country you reside in or an east/ south-east Asian country. In the UK we mostly find bamboo in garden centres, used simply for growing runner beans. In Japan national museums are made of bamboo and in honour of its evolving history. In Bangladesh mud and bamboo huts remain the vernacular of village areas as the city encroaches into the countryside. In Indonesia traditional basket making is disappearing in exchange for plastic reproductions. Bamboo wood is synonymously linked with Asia and inextricably connects people with a place. Aims ■To explore the multiple meanings given to bamboo in different cultures and diverse ways it has been used. ■To consider how it is used in an everyday settings. ■To consider how bamboo is used in connecting people in different countries and exchanging ideas and methodologies of communication. Tank Scent of Scagliola Michael Hampton / Peter Suchin September 10 - October 2, 2010 Private View: Thursday, September 9, 6 – 9pm This exhibition strategically offsets the works of two artists who are also practicing critics, writers whose visual work may also be read as a form of interrogative address, albeit of a kind that is inherent within artistic practice itself. Michael Hampton’s drawings and constructions take as their point of departure the artistic and philosophical conventions of western picture-making, notably the issues of representation, support, structure, flatness and frame. He literally pulls apart these received but arguably outworn vehicles of expression so as to question and reinscribe the limits of their plausible operation. As Hampton himself remarks, in engaging with his work “the viewer’s stray focus is deliberately forced to confront the mute, intrinsic strangeness of the object”, to critically consider the ideological platitudes – and infringements – that comprise the artistic canon and its recurring conceits. Peter Suchin, in employing and reworking a substantial range of established artistic codes, similarly addresses several prevalent tropes of recent and contemporary art. His paintings, as the writers David Hopkins and Sally O’Reilly have observed, are tightly composed yet border on chaos and dissolution, appearing to fall apart and re-form themselves like optical illusions or picture-puzzles designed to seduce – or to disorientate – the spectator. These complicated, layered, recursive paintings also provoke a wilful ambiguity with respect to their status as pictorial representation or unsullied abstraction, keeping both ends of the spectrum constantly in play. The term Scagliola refers to a cheap but popular substitute for marble, first produced in Italy in the seventeenth century. With a practice that overlaps architecture and interiors, painting and written script, Saif Osmani's latest exhibition explores the notion of The Anti-Object through a sequence of ‘found’ objects, creating cross-cultural semiotic links between London (UK), Mecca (Saudi Arabia) and Sylhet (north-east Bangladesh). By drawing meaning from pre-existing narratives in space, a reality of continuous dimensional experiences becomes possible, beyond concretised religious settings and iconography. Paintings of Jesus Christ and the crucifix are re-attributing to an Islamic aesthetic, symbolic buildings and spatial environments are materially examined, from the constructs of a stall at a street market to an exploding Kaaba, reconstructed.
