Call for Submissions - SOMNAMBULIST - EXTENDED DEADLINE
http://www.4artinc.com/ARTISTS_SUBMISSION/Annual/4ArtAnnual.html

4Art Inc Gallery asks imaginative and innovative artists of all media to explore and implore our dreams in Somnambulist. Your teeth fall out, one by one. You’re being chased by a faceless, nameless nemesis. You’re flying, feeling invincible, when suddenly you start to lose steam. You fall, and soon you’re plummeting towards the earth, out of control. Right before you hit the ground, you wake up. Dreams have captivated, fascinated, and baffled humankind for as long as we have been sleeping. What are they trying to tell us? And if dreams have something to communicate, as if they know something about us that we don’t know, who is saying these things? After all, you’re being chased, but you never really know who is chasing you or why; you fall, but you don’t know why you’re unable to fly. What would the answer reveal about ourselves? We spend an entire third of our lives sleeping—that’s years spent in the dream world, in an entirely different realm, untouched by the crises of our waking lives; all you are left with is your Self, confronting the fabrications of your own mind. If it’s only you, with no one else to cloud your thoughts, shouldn’t it be possible to do whatever you want? What would happen if you were able to take full control of your dream life and use it as the sketchbook for the final canvas of your waking life? Studies have shown that brain activity during the dream state is the same as in our waking state; performing an action in a dream, like memorizing a poem or writing a song, is no different from performing the same action upon waking. An athlete can perfect his technique, an orator can practice her speech… an artist can find inspiration and revelation—all without leaving the refuge of one’s bed. Imagine the dream world as a blank canvas. You are both the painter and the paint. Somnambulist marks the launch of 4Art's highly anticipated annual curated show, kick-starting in September and overlapping with Chicago Artist's Month in October. The show will take place in the second floor exhibition space of the internationally renowned Zhou B Art Center. The space is 14,000 square feet in size, with 12 feet high ceilings. 4Art is open to a variety of media, including, but not limited to: sculpture, graphic and digital art, oil, acrylic, watercolor, photography, mixed media, video installation, and performance art. The exhibition will run from September 17 through October 15, 2010.

A major London Art Award is now open for artists to submit their work online at LondonFestivalFringe.com. This is one of 10 London Awards in the London Festival Fringe, August 2 – 30. “The London Fringe is all about turning the stone that is London over and showing the hidden alternatives that exist in the city”, said Nick Kaplony, London Art Award Judge. “The London centric viewpoint has always been questioned and challenged; one of the things that makes any creative scene exciting is the change and influx of new ideas. These things are particularly prevalent in London. I think a Fringe Festival is particularly important because there is so much going on here that just doesn’t get seen and I see it as the Fringe Festival’s role to help discover hidden gems.” The London Art Award will be given to an artist whose work is exciting, contemporary and pushes the boundaries of art. An exhibition of shortlisted artists will be to be held at 3 Befordbury Gallery, Covent Garden, WC2N 4BP, opening on 5 August 2010. Judges on the selection panel include: Jason Brooks, Artist; Nick Kaplony, Artsquest & Pumphouse Gallery; Zoe Whitley, Curator Contemporary Collections, Victoria & Albert Museum. Submissions are now open and close on 15 June – please visit www.londonfestivalfringe.com/general/awards/artaward/ for more information. Hector Anchundia Art Gallery
http://www.www,hectoranchundia.com

Neoexpressionist Hector Anchundia (An-CHUN-dee-ah) concentrates on abstract figurative art. The feminine figure embodies the principal object of Anchundia’s work, giving him the ability to play with movement and lend form to his compositions. Born in Vinces, Ecuador on April 17, 1942, Anchundia remains an artist of the tropics, “loud, colorful, and full of life,” visible in the reds, oranges, and yellows that he uses in his paintings. His arrival in New York in the late 1970’s, however, was transformative, and his paintings evolved from naturalist depictions to abstracted forms of the human figure. Producing works of exceptional poetic sensibility has kept Anchudia in constant evolution as a painter. Figures, colors, and shadows all reflect the artist’s emotions, moods, anxieties, and dreams; and signal his fascination for the display of power and confidence in body language, as well as the expressiveness of the eyes. A talented draftsman, Anchundia innovates with forms, themes and ideas; moreover, his experimentation opens his work to political, philosophical and even religious interpretations.

Each installment of art diaries asks artists to reflect and develop a concept around a given theme. It creates an interactive and diverse display of ideas, through the visual lens of different individuals, without actually reading, hearing, or speaking. Art Diaries explores what happens when something that is usually kept private is shared, becoming a process of universal visual communication from artist to artist and from artist to viewer.
