CALL FOR ARTISTS – ART DIARIES EXHIBITION SERIES: APRIL-JUNE 2010 THEME, “BOUND”
http://www.4artinc.com
|
|
4Art Inc Gallery is currently seeking talented and risk-taking artists to participate in its newest quarterly exhibition series, Art Diaries. ***The DEADLINE for the April-June 2010 theme, “Bound,” has been EXTENDED TO MARCH 13!***
Have you ever kept a secret from everyone except yourself? Have you ever kept a diary, confiding your secrets to paper? Imagine if your diaries were published, their pages torn from the binding, tacked to the wall like an open wound, for all the world to see. Your darkest secrets, your deepest fears… your greatest joys, your most visionary dreams, your most extraordinary revelations. And yet, for many visual artists, the canvas acts as the diary, the personal vessel that, when marked, suddenly releases something from within that could not otherwise be expressed out loud or written in a book. Art Diaries is a provocative new series that asks artists to look within themselves and visually “write” what is usually unspoken, to communicate those suppressed thoughts without actually speaking.
Art Diaries explores what happens when something that is usually kept private is shared, becoming a process of universal visual communication from artist to artist and from artist to viewer. Why do we keep diaries? If diary writing is a private act, how do diary writers relate to one another once their thoughts are exposed? What becomes of the relationship between the private and the public once this exposure takes place? Art Diaries is communication at its rawest and most profound; what we write in diaries often include words that we cannot, would not, or should not say out loud. It is in this territory that the artist reigns.
For more information, visit http://www.4artinc.com/ARTISTS%20SUBMISSION/ArtDiaries/4ArtArtDiaries.html and look for “Bound,” the April – June 2010 theme. Submission applications are available in both PDF and HTML formats.

MIRA - Martignano International Residency for Artists
http://www.miraresidency.com
|
|
MIRA: MARTIGNANO INTERNATIONAL ARTIST RESIDENCY, supports international artists and promotes the cultural exchange
between artistic disciplines and international dialogue. At MIRA
we have created a pristine environment exclusively for the
interaction of the artists and their work needs. Our non-profit
institution offers 5 large furnished rooms, 3 with private
bathrooms which serve as living spaces, although they are all
adapted with work desks for the artists to be able to create in the
comfort of their room if they feel necessary. The grounds are
divided between 2 buildings, one having the main shared work
studio, and the other permitting the artists to work freely
throughout the house in order to create wherever they feel more
at ease. We assist the artists as much as possible in order for
them to concentrate solely on their creating. Once a month we
organize an open house in which we invite local artists and the
surrounding community in order to further promote the cultural
exchange between the artists and their adopted home. Also, we
are fortunate enough to be sponsored by the Comune of
Martignano who have kindly donated the gallery installations at the
Palazzo Palmieri, every two months, in order for our artists to have
an exhibition. Artists, critics, press and the community at large are
invited to attend. I funds permit, a brochure is printed to
document the exhibition.
Studios are available from one to six month periods. We have
found that one month is barely enough to arrive and adapt, let
alone create and exhibit. For stays of longer than three months,
the options for those non European Community Citizens are to
either leave the Schengen Zone and return, or applying for an
extension on the tourist visa. We can assist you either way. Please
check ahead with your local embassy and we will check on or side.
There is a monthly fee charge of between 700 and 900 Euro
hundred Euro. This money goes solely to the maintenance and
continuous improvement of what we can offer to our attending
artists. MIRA does neither cover living / material nor travelling
expenses, although we will be there to greet you either at Brindisi
International Airport or the train station at Lecce and our driver
will take to the airport again at the end of your residency.
The submission period is all year round and the response
turnaround is usually in a two - three week period.
WHAT WE PROVIDE:
Studios – MIRA is divided into two buildings and we have
designated interior and exterior areas of MIRA’s grounds
permitting artists to work where they feel most comfortable. There
is one large, interior studio to be shared by all artists.
Furnished rooms – three with private bathroom (Cleaning twice a
week.)
Kitchen and Dining – Commonly used kitchen and dining area with
all appliances.
Laundry service once a week.
Common areas for the artists to relax, sit and talk, eat.
Bicycles for each of our artists to comfortably get around town.
Wireless internet throughout both buildings.
Open Studios – for invited art critics / artists / art guided tours.
We aid in organizing, inviting guests, etc.
Workshops – It is not necessary but if any artists are interested in
working with the local artisans or perhaps giving a weekly class to
the young children of the area, we would be glad to organize these
events. Some artists in the past have particularly enjoyed sharing
their knowledge with the locals and at the same time learning from
them.
Tours – We know that we are in an extremely popular area of Italy
and that many of the artists that come to us are interested in
discovering the area. We can help you with any travel
arrangements you may need throughout Italy.
Exhibition – We help organize and promote an exhibition every two
months at the Palazzo Palmieri, which include selected pieces from
each of our artists in residence.
WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW:
Please sent by e-mail only to: mira@miraresidency.com
1. Biography
2. Application form
3. Examples of recent work (as an attachment to the email)
4. Intended project during residency (this can be either a
specific project created at the residency or perhaps you will
be continuing a work in progress.)
5. Link to website (if you have)
JURY:
A jury of local and international experts in their fields decide on
the acceptance of the applicants.

'You say tomato, I say tomato'
We are planning an exhibiton about the nature of dialogic disagreement. Our proposition is that in this context misunderstanding occurs due to failures in communication rather than fundamental differences in opinion. Such malfunctions within conversations result from conflicting learnt definitions of words and differing conceptions of their meaning.
We are looking for works that engage with semantics in spoken language in order to explore and demonstrate the above ideas.
In light of the above please consider the following statement in regards to your own work...
'Every conversation is a game, every player has their own rules.'
We are looking for completed works or proposals for new or relevant work by Friday 12th feb. [Video, audio, performance, spoken word]
Please send an artist's CV, artist's statement and your proposals (maximum of 3), including links to past works, if available, by email to: nathalie.boobis@nxnwfestival.co.uk If you have completed work (maximum of 3 submissions), please post your artist's CV, artist's statement and DVD Pals, CDs or relevant documentation of performances to: Anna Smith, Flat 3, 5 Mauldeth Road West, Manchester, M20 3WB

please watch my video on youtube ETNIKTRONIKA and myspace music sample ETNIKTRONIKA. ETNIKTRONIKA is a Laguna, Philippines-based sound art group that uses handmade electronic sound art instruments, as well as some ethnic instruments, to create their sound. Many of their instruments are crafted from second hand items obtained from nearby junk shops, such as the 'Uyabon' (a word that means 'girlfriend in Ilonggo'), which is a cross between a mannequin and a toy keyboard with tampered circuitry. Led by Mel Araneta, Etniktronika is carving a new path simultaneously into music and art by creating unique instruments that create a unique sound.

Artist Call: Gatekeepers, curated by ANGELA GROSSMANN.
http://www.vantageartprojects.com/current_submissions.html
|
|
VANTAGE POINT, EXHIBITION-IN-PRINT Volume II Gatekeepers, curated by ANGELA GROSSMANN.
This an open invitation to artists anywhere who are making work on the theme of exclusion - specifically their own experience of it, be it social, political, personal, racial, gender, age, class, or art world based. This invitation is open to artists anywhere working in all media at any stage of their art making.
Negotiating the ever-shifting maze of the art world industry is a Sisyphean task. Its rewards are well known: credibility, status, fame, wealth and (often fleeting) historical significance. The costs of failure are legion: shame, huge art school debts, derision and quite often, low or no income. Many artists have become critical and disinterested in the dominant pathways to ‘success’ and the increasing power of institutions, art schools Biennials, art fairs and market driven blockbusters. In this time of shape shifting economy the view from ‘outside the gates’ may be the more interesting one.
Putting the alternative back into alternative thinking, we invite you to submit work for this project. 30 artists whose work best suits these ideas will be part of an Exhibition-in-Print. For submission information see: www.VantageArtProjects.com/current_submissions.html
Submissions will be accepted from November 15, 2009 to March 15, 2010. Submission fee required of $45 but early-bird entries received by Dec. 31, 2009 are at an incentive fee of $35.
All submissions will be blind juried.
Angela Grossmann has devoted much of her career to examining themes of displacement and social margins. She came to public attention as part of the Young Romantics exhibition in 1985 at the Vancouver Art Gallery and continues to work with Douglas Coupland, Graham Gillmore, Attila Richard Lukacs and Derek Root in group exhibitions. Angela Grossmann teaches at the Emily Carr University. Her work has been exhibited widely across Canada, the United States and Europe. (www.angelagrossmann.com)
Vantage Art Projects supports the contemporary arts through a commitment to providing parallel opportunities for artists, and connecting art enthusiasts and collectors with exciting new talent. The scope of our projects includes: Vantage Exhibitions, Vantage Art Press and Vantage Editions. For further information email info@vantageartprojects.com.

Just right after the German elections
we invite you to „Second Poll“ , he exhibition of works by Wu Zhi and Alexej Tchernyi. See Angela Merkel & Co from another point of view! The basis for the artworks have been several posters of the past political campaign for the German Parliament this past September. Both artists were inspired by the omnipresent effect of the posters – after weeks of being confronted with these less expressive, monotone, not-so-well photographed pictures, their artist's soul could not bear it longer and so the artist couple decided to create their own posters.A political motivation is not insight, rather the pure fun for the art – a palpable accent in the works that can be seen through their spontaneity and freedom of thought. “ We've created a scale for this project which gave us space for realizing our spontaneous ideas”. The works can also be seen as collages – the portrait has given the path to follow, though the figure itself has been alienated, covered or totally transformed, leaving room for the new creation...

A lot can be said about it, but basically its two Englishmen in giant comedy animals heads, seeking a dialogue with Koreans about how their culture is changing and what place traditions have in the Korea of today as it under goes rapid modernization. You can find out more about Tiger and Bear in the links below.

One aspect of the project is that Tiger and Bear are interested in giving up control of their image by allowing others to interpret them and their project, which is where the comic comes in:
Collaborators are given a choice of two briefs. Writers need to sketch out or script a 4 panel storyboard with some dialogue, about anything they want. It can be funny, serious, political, sad, historical, whatever, as long as it involves the two foreigners dressed as tiger and bear.
These stories are then passed onto illustrators/artists to transform into four panel comic strips. How the illustrators choose to portray the story and the two characters is completely free, as we really love receiving a range of different styles and most importantly a range of different takes on the two characters.
What happens with the finished products is they are published in various media outlets around Korea. We have had a fantastic response to the project so far with strips appearing weekly in The Korea Herald (the countries longest lasting English language national newspaper), a monthly spot in a community magazine called Daegu Pockets and a national magazine called Eloquence that is published in both Korea and the U.S.A, and weekly appearances on several popular Korean blogs such as theoneonefour.com and Expacked. We are looking for more media outlets in both Korea and overseas, particularly in the U.K.
Eventually we plan on publishing compendium of the comics and putting on art shows in various art galleries.
There will be no financial compensation at this point, primarily because we're not making any money from this, but credit will of course be given. It will also present an exceptional networking opportunity.
The project has evolved into a really fun and creative collaborative project between foreigners and Koreans. If this sounds like something you want to get involved with email us at tigerandbearkorea@hotmail.com with the subject headline 'COMIC' and join our facebook group!
