Columbia Journal Full Color Publication
http://www.columbiajournal.org/art.call.htm

How do you create a warning system to prevent an accidental unearthing of 200 million pounds of radioactive nuclear waste? A simple sign, some chain link and a military post might work today. But what about 10,000 years from now? In 2002 the U.S. Department of Energy brought together engineers, archaeologists, anthropologists and linguists and asked them this question. What type of warning system can be put in place so people, 370 generations from now, won't open the glowing door? What they came up with is hardly inspiring: a large earthen mound with a salt core and two identical Dr. Strangelove-esque control rooms with a warning message written in the six official languages of the U.N. and Navajo. Construction of this Waste Isolation Pilot Plant is scheduled to begin in less than three years. What if an artist designed the system? Columbia: A Journal of Literature and Art is asking artists, architects, cartoonists, computer engineers, graphic designers, scientists—and anyone else up for the challenge— just that question. Design a warning sign or create a work, a system, that speaks to the nuclear gravesite issue. Graphic novelists might translate the project and solution into story panels. Architects may offer a blueprint for the facility itself. The artistic focus may be as narrow as an image on a sign, or as broad as a full-scale vision of the future. The Journal is encouraging maximum interpretation and creativity. Eight works will be selected for print publication in Issue 48 of the Journal (spring 2010), with additional, select submissions posted on the Journal website, columbiajournal.org. Submissions can be created in any format/media, so long as they can be reproduced on the print page. The only limits are size: please make sure that your canvas measures 6' x 9' (horizontal x vertical) or 12' x 18' (horizontal x vertical). Submissions that exceed these specifications must be able to size down, legibly, or they will not be considered. The deadline for submission is October 1, 2009. Please email submissions to columbia.journal.arts@gmail.com with the word 'submission' in the subject line.

MeetMarket submissions for Sheffield Doc/Fest now open – artists welcome
http://www.sheffdocfest.com/meetmarket

Sheffield Doc/Fest invites submissions from artists working in single-screen and/or cross-platform/interactive media, to our flagship documentary and cross-platform marketplace pitching event, MeetMarket. MeetMarket is Doc/Fest's pitching initiative designed to match documentary makers' most innovative project ideas with UK and international buyers. MeetMarket generated £7.5m in negotiation in 2008, with the one-on-one matchmade personalised format meaning you can discuss your project creatively in detail with specialist funders and commissioners, and without the usual pressure in public pitches of pitching to a large room of people. Artists should be making work which in some way fits the category of documentary/factual in subject. Although no financing needs to have been secured already, projects will be favoured which are at an advanced stage of research and development, if not in production, with projects having being developed beyond a conceptual proposal. At MeetMarket, buyers, commissioners, funders and executive producers from broadcast, cinema, internet, mobile and beyond view online one-minute pitch teasers of innovative documentary ideas, along with one-page treatments, in advance of Doc/Fest. From this, they select which projects they would like to discuss in one-to-one meetings at MeetMarket. Projects can be in development, production or post-production, and cross-platform projects are also very welcome. MeetMarket will give artists an opportunity to present new projects to funders and commissioners from across the spectrum of the documentary and art worlds. Participants to pitch to comprise major international factual funders, including Wellcome Trust, ICA, Tate Media, Channel 4, BBC, ITVS, Arte France, ARTE GEIE, Sundance Institute, Britdoc, ZDF, AVRO, Cinereach, NPS, RTE, ARD, YLE, and over 80 more. Also at Sheffield Doc/Fest will be a special conference session and networking event on the meeting of factual and documentary production and artists film and video. This will be for documentary producers, artist filmmakers, documentary and web funders, and anyone else interested in this crossover area. It is strongly recommend artists attending Sheffield Doc/Fest participate in this session, at which there will be excellent networking opportunities to meet the documentary community. Applying to MeetMarket is an online submissions process, and more information can be found at http://www.sheffdocfest.com/view/meetmarket. Artists are welcome and ecouraged to contact MeetMarket producer Charlie Phillips in advance of applying for full advice by emailing Charlie@sidf.co.uk Deadline for submitting to MeetMarket is strictly Friday 4th September.

2009 Freedom to Create Prize Launch - International Prize for Artists on the Frontiers Enters Second Year
http://www.freedomtocreateprize.com

1 June 2009, London – Following the success of last year’s inaugural prize, the 2009 Orient Global Freedom to Create Prize is announced today in London. This unique prize highlights the talent and courage of artists on the frontlines of the developing world.

Commenting on the launch Orient Global Chairman, Richard F. Chandler, said: “History shows that prosperous societies are founded upon creativity. Societies that encourage artistic expression build strong foundations for economic, political and cultural development. They will lead tomorrow’s world.”

He added “The Orient Global Freedom to Create Prize celebrates the talent of artists who bring messages of hope to places of turmoil and despair. It also recognises their courage to confront injustice in circumstances where there are visible costs and less visible rewards. They inspire the human spirit and nourish the creativity needed for progress.”

The Orient Global Freedom to Create Prize is an international award established in 2008. The Prize consists of three categories: the Main Prize, open to individuals or artistic groups in all creative fields; the Youth Prize, open to artists under the age of 18; and the Imprisoned Artist Prize, focusing on artists who are currently imprisoned for their artwork. The total prize fund is US$ 125,000 which will be divided between the winning artists and their nominated advocacy organisations to further the cause their artwork has highlighted.

The winner of the 2008 Prize was Cont Mhlanga, a controversial Zimbabwean playwright who has risked his life challenging the Mugabe dictatorship for over 25 years. His winning submission was a politically charged satire ‘The Good President’, presents a fictionalised account of a ruthless dictator, but closely mirrored recent events in Zimbabwe.

The 2008 Imprisoned Artist Prize winner was Burmese satirist Zarganar, imprisoned for 35 years for mocking the Burmese government in the wake of Cyclone Nargis. The Youth Prize was awarded to City of Rhyme, a hip-hop group from the Brazilian favelas.

Open to all artists, the closing date for entries is 14 August. A shortlist will be announced at the beginning of September and judging will take place over the following weeks. This year’s Prize will be judged by a panel of high profile artists, opinion leaders, and human rights lawyers. Details of these panellists will be announced shortly. The award ceremony will take place in London in November 2009.

The Prize is implemented by ArtAction, a philanthropic organisation established by Orient Global in 2007 to improve lives by harnessing the unique powers and properties of the arts. Since inception, ArtAction has supported over 200 projects in more than 80 countries, improving the lives of an estimated 12 million people. www.artaction.com

Topic Sampling spaces This idea covers the wide notion of space as it is perceived in light of the extension of urban space. The latter implies a new contextualization of what one understands by “space”. To mentally perceive space means to organize it. The current theme offers towards assessment various conceptions of space, suggesting deconstructive interpretations, abandonment of context, interference, and so on, without leaving out metaphors or illusory characteristics. One will encourage speculation of the whole range of tensions and emotional reactions which are brought forth when historical agreement on representation and description of space meets subjective and random perceptions. Key words: manipulated images, quoted lines, elements emphasizing the architectural nature of space, the usage of figurative or abstract modules suggesting spaces in motion. * Sampling (Engl.) = arrangement of existing visual or audio material with the main intention of playing with the material’s formal characteristics. Rather than quoting from the material, whose sources are often unclear, sampling aims to reformulate it. LOW LIVES- CALL TO ARTISTS
http://www.labotanica.org/news.html

Low Lives is a new exhibition of live performance-based works by artists from different parts of the world and projected in real time at FiveMyles in Brooklyn, NY; Diaspora Vibe Gallery in Miami, FL; and labotanica, Houston, TX. Low Lives is curated by Jorge Rojas. Low Lives examines works that critically investigate, challenge, and extend the potential of performance practice presented live through online broadcasting networks. These networks, though seldom utilized for performance art, provide a new alternative and efficient medium for presenting and viewing performances. Low Lives is about not simply the presentation of performative gestures at a particular place and time but also about the transmission of these moments and what gets lost, conveyed, blurred, and reconfigured when utilizing this medium. Low Lives embraces works with a lo-fi aesthetic such as low pixel image and sound quality, contributing to a raw, DIY and sometimes voyeuristic quality to the transmission and reception of the work. Artists selected to participate in this exhibition will transmit their work live through BlogTV, a platform that allows for anyone with a computer, webcam and internet connection to broadcast live. Interested artists are encouraged to visit BlogTV and their FAQ page to familiarize them with the site. Submission Requirements: -Artists interested can submit previously created works or new work to be considered through links to artist’s websites or other web destinations. Duration of works must be under 5 minutes to be considered - Artist statement including how work relates to the theme - CV - Email all submission materials to: keoqui@gmail.com Important Dates: June 30th- Submission deadline July 15th- Artists notified on selection August 8th- Show opens at FiveMyles, Diaspora Vibe Gallery & labotanica- 6:00 – 9:00 pm (EST)
