CALADAN GALLERY presents "PLANT LIFE", a juried exhibition
http://www.caladangallery.com/
March 25, 2008
CALADAN GALLERY presents 'PLANT LIFE', a juried exhibition. It is in the shadows of itself; exists, breaths, and prospers under the snow in a clear day in winter; lives in the dark crevices of the ocean floor; abounds with and harbors life in the thick jungle; dots and transforms the desert landscape; enjoys a seasonal renaissance in temperate climates. Plant life gives life to us and we in turn, afford ourselves to it. We are in an inescapable romance, a giving and taking of life's energy with that which grows around us. It grows in the cracks of concrete in the urban complexity; it flourishes in the most inopportune of places. Artists working in painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, photography, digital media, textiles, mixed media, and installation are eligible. Caladan has a new format! To view it and to download prospectus go to: www.caladangallery.com and click on 'Enter Upcoming Exhibition', or write to: Box 391939, Cambridge MA 02139. Or call us at: 978-979-8922. Fee is $20/3 images.

CALADAN GALLERY presents "TRANSFORMING MATTER", a juried exhibition
http://www.caladangallery.com
Objects, histories, have a basic reality to them. Part of what we do as artists is question the balance of this reality with possibility. We investigate, non-judgmentally, the nature of things as they are seen, and as they are unseen. We put existence through a ringer. Whether it be an idea or a toy or a mathematical equation, it lies subject to scrutiny through the eyes of a visual alchemist. This exhibition will challenge the limitations set forth for us, but rarely adhered to. Artists working in painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, photography, digital media, textiles, mixed media, and installation are eligible.

California Arts Council Artists in Residence--Individual Artists Residency Grants
http://www.cac.ca.gov/?id=101
This program supports artists in residency activities taking place in schools, both in the classroom and in after-school settings. Artists of all disciplines are eligible to apply. Projects should enable the participants to understand the art form involved and to develop their creativity through that art form. All projects consist primarily of hands-on experience and may also include the history, critical theory, and ideas of the art form. Each project is locally designed and developed by the artist and sponsoring organization. Applicants may submit applications under one of three categories. Effective arts organization and school partnerships--to create and sustain projects that take place in public or private schools, during regular school hours. Specialized schools, court or continuation schools or schools focusing on students with disabilities are also eligible. A one-to-one dollar match is required. K-12 standards-based arts in after-school programs--projects that take place on school campuses, reinforce, expand and deepen the arts learning for students. A one-to-one dollar match is required. Planning Grant-artists in school--A limited number of planning grants are available to support non-profit arts organizations with no or limited history working with schools, but have identified a school(s) in their community as a possible partner. Awards in this category would assist the arts organization and a school partner to plan a course of action and strategies to incorporate community arts resources into the ongoing standards-based arts activities of a school. Planning grants do not require a match. Contact CAC for deadlines.

Call for Artist Seattle Civic Square
http://www.seattle.gov/arts
The Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the city’s Fleets & Facilities Department and Triad Development Inc., seeks an artist to serve on the design team for the Seattle Civic Square - an open space planned for the downtown block where the city’s Public Safety Building once stood.
The call is open to established professional artists living in Washington, Oregon, California or British Columbia. Artists who work in glass or light media are encouraged to apply. The city reserves the right to invite artists to apply who live elsewhere in the United States or Canada.
The commission for the plaza artwork will be between $250,000 and $300,000 for design, fabrication and installation. The selected artist will work with the international design team of Atelier Dreiseitl, a German landscape architecture firm; lead architects GGLO of Seattle; and architecture firm Foster + Partners of London. The artist will contract with Atelier Dreiseitl.
Triad will develop the site, which will feature a large public plaza (approx. 30,000 square feet) and retail area flanked by an office and residential tower. More than half the block - bordered by Third and Fourth avenues between James and Cherry streets - will be designed as open space. Redevelopment of the block completes the city’s Civic Center Campus, which includes City Hall, the Justice Center and Seattle Municipal Tower.
The distinctive open space will provide a place for recreation, relaxation and celebration. Planned features for the open space include extensive landscaping in cascading terraces; green roofs on retail spaces; a water feature flowing through the site; and an amphitheater designed to support a variety of events – from concerts to exhibitions.
Construction is anticipated to begin in 2009, with completion of the Civic Square and commercial structures projected for 2011.
