Two Soldiers, by Nacho Arnau and Continental Film Night |
PETER WIX: This short, poignant animation video by Valencian Nacho Arnau was made to accompany the Brechtian soundtrack song Two Soldiers by Continental Film Night. Its naif style and balanced, profound view of the lingering Iraq debacle has been acclaimed in festivals throughout Spain, where half the CFN band is located, picking up one key video award and becoming a favourite on video sites worldwide. The story it reflects in a haiku-like lyric tells of Ihab, a young boy in Baghdad who thinks his brothers have been killed by invading US soldiers. He is soon to discover the full tragedy of the situation. War and destruction are the means to even greater barbarism.
The shadow art technique adopted by Arnau is a tribute to the 1920s cinematographer Lotte Reiniger (The Adventures of Prince Achmed).
