Art Colleges around the world
Goldsmiths, University Of London

Goldsmiths is all about the freedom to experiment, to think differently, to be an individual. That’s why our list of former students includes names like Antony Gormley, Julian Clary, Damien Hirst, Mary Quant, Bridget Riley, Vivienne Westwood, Graham Coxon, Malcolm McLaren.

We bring creative and unconventional approaches to all of our subjects, but everything we do is based on the highest academic standards of teaching and research. And we’re part of the internationally recognised University of London, so your degree will help you stand out from the crowd.

With almost everything together on one site, there’s a strong campus feel to life here: we’re big enough to offer some fantastic facilities, but not so big that things seem impersonal and unfriendly.

The active social scene means that there’s always a variety of events going on (from performances, concerts and exhibitions to entertainment in the Students’ Union and the University of London Union), and we’re only a quick train ride away from the sights and sounds of Central London.

Department and information about the department
Goldsmiths currently has nearly 9,000 students from around the world and offers a broad range of undergraduate, postgraduate, professional and adult education courses. These range from the arts and humanities including design, drama, history, literature, media and communications, music, visual arts, visual cultures; the social sciences – anthropology, psychology, sociology; computing; and education, with interdisciplinary work across all areas. The unifying factors spanning this range of diverse subjects are a liberal and creative approach to teaching, with the emphasis on freedom of thought and expression, and a research-led teaching ethos. Above all, we aim to maximise the benefits that our relatively small size brings, creating a stimulating but supportive atmosphere, in which students know each other, and are known by their tutors.

Goldsmiths carries out world-class research in wide-ranging areas, and is home to over 20 research centres in fields from cultural studies to architecture to drama. The last RAE produced strong ratings with particular success for Anthropology, Sociology, English, Art and Design, Media and Communi...[ Read All ]

"When I sat down to pick my university choices I was adamant that the university I chose had to tick all the boxes, I wasn’t going to settle for anything less. One of the main points I was looking for was that it’s a well-recognised institution and respected by future employers. I wanted a worthy and credible place and that is why I chose Goldsmiths. For me the fact that it is in London, where the theatre scene is huge, is a real bonus. I’m just down the road from Shaftsbury Avenue, which I love.

Going to university in London is a great way to network and meet interesting people, both socially and professionally. I have only been at Goldsmiths for a year and it has already bought me a month’s work experience in a casting agency, with the opportunity to continue working there as and when I want.

I wanted the university I chose to challenge me and match my expectations. Goldsmiths certainly does that with the wide variety of theoretical and practical work on my course, challenging me to try new things every step of the ...[ Read All ]
