Current Exhibition

The “Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig – Academy of Visual Arts, Leipzig”, belongs to the oldest academies of arts in Germany. Its change of names shows evidence for the living history of the school, which was founded in 1764 as the “Zeichnungs-, Mahlerey und Architectur-Akademie”. Since 1950 the schools bears its present name “Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig”. Today, 450 students are enrolled in the courses “Book design/Graphic design”, “Painting/Graphics”, “Photography” and “Media Art”. The professors and lecturers teaching at the HGB have an international reputation and are known for their artistic work.

Department and information about the department

The education comprises a duration of study of 10 semesters. It is split into in a two-year term of foundation studies and the following main courses. During the integrative basic courses students get acquainted with the fundamentals of all courses offered by the academy. Later on during the main courses the students will be taught in the expert knowledge of their chosen course. Beside the practical work the theoretical education is an essential part of study. Furthermore, the extensively renovated workshops of the HGB offer a traditional artistic introduction in the following fields: Lithography, Etching, Serigraphy and the graphic workshops Manual Typesetting, Letterpress, Offset printing, Reproduction and Book covering. Students and teachers produce in cooperation with the “Institute for Book Design” books with highest art standards of art, which are gaining national and international prices each year.

Student Support

There are a number of Scholarships available for students of the Academy:

Scholarship by the Friends of the Gallery of Contemporary Art
(Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst)
The Scholarship is determined to give financial support to students’s projects. The scholarship holders are invited to use infrastructure as well as discussion forums of the gallery. If required, students are provided with an atelier within the gallery’s studios up to a period of two months.

Scholarship by the Regional Bank of Saxony (Sachsen LB)
for Graduates of the HGB Leipzig
This scholarship for projects is announced by a cooperation between the Sachsen LB and the Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst. It is offered to graduates of all courses and classes each year though only works that document on concrete examples of the dissertation will be incorporate. The scholarship is endowed with 9000 euros and contains a work’s presentation which will be developed together with the gallery and takes place in one of the gallery’s projectrooms the year after the dissertation.
