History
The School of Classical Drawing
The teaching of drawing at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek almost certainly dates back to 1914. With a number of different visual artists, trained at the Academy of Art in Copenhagen, as teachers, preparation was given for entry to such higher establishments as the various Schools of Visual Arts within the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Formerly it was the rule that one should draw from Classical sculpture prior to admission to the Academy. Such work was undertaken at the Casts Collection of the Danish National Gallery or at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. After the “revolt” of the 1960s changed its character and purpose, the teaching became part of a broader preparatory education which included architecture, design and visual art, and this remained the case into the 1970s. Today the School of Classical Drawing is a modest, independent institution.

Our Aims.
To provide a basis for further education and training by teaching, under the concept of drawing, in a broader sense, in relation to animation, architecture, visual arts and design. The objective is to impart knowledge leading to the acquisition of a study technique and a visual terminology which, in turn, will develop a visual competence as a foundation for further studies.
A principal concern is that drawing should be seen as a tool for the production of creative work in the passage from idea, via examination and experiment, to seeing how well the finished work succeeds in meeting the artist’s original intentions. The teaching should provide insight into the creative work process, with the assistance of exercises in visual evaluation.

Where we are – and how to get there
The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, at Dantes Plads 7, 1556 Copenhagen V, constitutes the principal study facility in the centre of Copenhagen. The museum is about 300 metres from Copenhagen Central Station and opposite the side of the Tivoli Amusement Park.

On completion of the course
About the Department
A certificate will be issued to show that the student has attended teaching throughout the entire study period. In specific cases a reference can be provided. The drawings completed during the course are regarded as evidence of the student’s potential for meriting acceptance for a longer training in the visual arts.

The Academic Staff and their Background.
There is one teacher at the school who will act as a mentor to the student throughout the entire period of study. The teacher has trained in the visual arts at the Schools of Visual Arts within the
Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts attaining the qualification of Cand.phil as well as being trained as a kunstpædogog (teacher of art) at the Kunstpædogogiske Skole, also part of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

There are no special facilities for students

Accommodation
There is, unfortunately, no provision for accommodation unless the applicant is registered as a visiting student from another establishment where he or she is participating in an ongoing course.
Visiting students (hospitanter in Danish) are entitled to apply for a room in a collegium (hall of residence or dormitory) on an equal footing with other students from institutes of higher education.

How to Apply
Send an e-mail and simply apply for enrolment. There is no application form. No special previously acquired skills are required though motivation is, naturally, a prerequisite. A minimum competence in the Danish language is necessary. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age. The maximum size of the class is 15 students.
