| The School Of Art And Design Berlin
The School of Art and Design Berlin Weissensee was set up in 1946 as the "Northern Art School" in a Berlin that had been completely destroyed but not yet divided. It is was founded by artists associated with the Bauhaus. Teaching began with some 500 students in the summer of 1946. The School's first director was the metal sculptor Otto Sticht (1901 - 1973). One year later the Soviet Military Administration issued the School with the necessary licence to gain state recognition as a university of art. From that time the School was called "University of Applied Art". Otto Sticht was succeeded as director in 1948 by the ceramics artist Jan Bontjes van Beek (1899 - 1969) who, however, was forced in 1950 by political difficulties to cede the office to the architect and designer Mart Stam (1899 - 1986). Mart Stam left an impression on the Art School which can still be felt today. For example, he was the initiator of the joint interdisciplinary foundation course. | One of the School’s unique and defining features is the fact that all students, around 680 in number, attend a one-year interdisciplinary art foundation course together. This foundation course is principally oriented towards the perception and visualisation of humans and their environment. A further special feature is the range of intensive theoretical courses running the entire length of degree courses for all students. A thesis, which is given a grade, forms part of the final examination. This emphasis on theoretical courses aims to promote the many and varied opportunities offered by academic investigations of cultural theory, aesthetics, art history and media history, as well as nurturing students’ communicative skills. A large number of optional courses, for example life drawing, photography, geometry for design, CAD, and others complete the range of courses on offer. The School of Art and Design Berlin Weissensee is also distinguished by its eleven workshops, which are open to students of all disciplines, and which offer students an opportunity to explore their ideas in practice. As part of the so-called Bologna process in EU countries, the School of Art and Design Berlin Weissensee plans to convert its current diploma courses in the areas of design into two consecutive degree courses (Bachelors degree after four years, Masters degree after five years). As required by the Conference of German Art School Rectors, only the "Fine Arts" degree, with the disciplines Sculpture and Painting, will remain a diploma degree. This conversion process will be completed by the year 2006.
The School of Art and Design Berlin Weissensee intends to intensify its programmes of further studies. From April 2005, the KHB offers a fee-paying further study programme in "Art Therapy" ending with a "Master of Arts in Art Therapy". This is aimed at artists who have already gained experience in social professions and who wish to train to become art therapists. The School of Art and Design Berlin Weissensee places great emphasis on international exchange. The School maintains cooperations with approx. 60 Art Schools in Europe, Asia, Australia and America and students have the opportunity to participate in exchange programmes. In percentage terms, the School of Art and Design Berlin Weissensee has occupied one of the top ranks among 250 German universities in the ERASMUS European student exchange programme (DAAD statistics) for many years. The immanent introduction of Bachelors and Masters degrees will mean the School will become even more attractive for foreign students. The proportion of foreign students at the School is approx. 17 %. In addition, some 60 exchange students from European countries come to Weissensee every year.

Once a year the students of the School of Art and Design Berlin Weissensee present their study projects and diploma theses from the past academic year to guests. Projects from all disciplines are presented. The open days normally take place on the second Saturday and Sunday in July, from 12 am to 8 pm.
The programme of the open day is published on the internet site of School of Art and Design Berlin Weissensee under www.kh-berlin.de approx. three weeks before the event. It is continually supplemented and updated until the final day.
