Current Exhibition

Waterford Institute of Technology is one of the largest institutes of technology in Ireland. It was established as a Regional Technical College in 1970, and was the first to be awarded Institute of Technology status in 1998. Over the period of this process, and as a result of an international quality review, the Institute was granted delegated authority by the National Council for Educational Awards to confer its own Certificates and Diplomas.

The Institute now confers its own awards at all levels from Higher Certificate to PhD, subject to standards set and monitored by the Higher Education and Training Awards Council (HETAC) which was established by the Government in June 2001, under the Qualifications (Education and Training) Act, 1999. The quality and standard of Irish educational awards is fully recognised globally. All Irish awards are included in the national framework of qualifications maintained by the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland, www.nqai.ie.

Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) is a university-level institution in the South-East of Ireland with over 10,000 students and 1000 staff. WIT offers tuition and research programs in various areas from National Certificate to PhD level.

Department and information about the department

The Department of Creative and Performing Arts was established in September 2006. The Department offers undergraduate courses in Art, Design and Music and opportunities for postgraduate research in Art, Design, Music, Contemporary Irish Theatre, and Postcolonial Studies.

Art
WIT offers students a unique opportunity to study art through a course with a strong contemporary basis. They are encouraged to take a broad view of the role of the artist in today's society, and themes studied include Art in relation to: Environment, Technology, Performance and Society.

Graphic Design
The Graphic Design Department aim is to produce graduates for the various areas of graphic design. The Design Department covers studio practice, design history, marking, and visual culture. Covering lectures/topics in photography, illustration, lettering & calligraphy, colour theory, computer graphics, 3D studies, design history, AppleMac Technology and software, branding & advertising, marketing, packaging design, poster, magazine & brochures design along with identity design. Academic Staff and Description

Dr Peter Jordan, Senior Lecturer in Art and Research Convenor of the Department, is leading the development of a taught Masters in Healing Arts, with a target commencement date of September 2007.

Dr Victor Merriman, Head of Department, is leading the development of a taught Masters in Contemporary Arts Practice, also for commencement in 2007.

Alumni

Launched in 2003, the WIT Alumni Association has gone from strength to strength. Once you graduate from WIT you automatically become a member, so there are no forms to fill out or fees to be paid. The Association has hosted many successful events to date with a very positive response from graduates. At these events graduates have welcomed the opportunity to network on a social and professional basis.
