| Wellesley College
Wellesley is a college for the student who has high personal, intellectual, and professional expectations. Beyond this common ground, there is no typical Wellesley student. Students come from all over the world, from different cultures and backgrounds, and they have prepared for Wellesley at hundreds of different secondary schools. Through the Davis Degree Program, women beyond the traditional college age, many with families, are part of the student body working toward a Wellesley degree. Women and men from other colleges and universities study at Wellesley through various exchange programs.
This diversity is made possible, in large part, by the College’s need-blind admission policy. Students are accepted without consideration of their ability to pay. Once admitted, those with demonstrated need receive financial aid through a variety of services.

The visual arts have occupied a central place in a Wellesley education since 1875. All students, regardless of their major, are encouraged to embrace our remarkable visual legacy and to help us shape its future. Located in the Jewett Art Center and Pendleton West, the Art Department is home to art history, studio art, architecture, and media arts.
The Art Department hosts many special events for the campus community, including guest lectures and gallery exhibitions, film screenings, and visiting artist demonstrations, and applied arts workshops. These events are free and open to all.

If you think you might pursue a major or minor in a visual and/or historical discipline, you should plan to elect a few art department courses during your first year if possible. This is particularly important if you are planning to study art abroad during your junior year or if you are considering a double major in art history/studio.
The Art Department does not give credit for AP classes in Studio or Art History.
Art History & Art Studio Foundation:
ARTH 100 (fall) and ARTH 101 (spring)
WRITING 125 is a special section of ARTH 100 and ARTH 101, which enables you to receive credit for both art history and your writing requirements.
Art Studio & Architecture Foundation:
ARTS 105 (drawing I) or ARTS 113 (three-dimentional design)
Media Arts Foundation:
ARTS 109 (two-dimensional design) or ARTS 108 (photo I - requires a studio application)

Jewett Art Galleries:
The Art Gallery is devoted to the exhibition of student work and shows generated by the Art Department. Exhibitions by professional artists may also be presented when the work relates to the educational goals and concerns of the Art Department. In addition to these spaces, the studio hallways of Jewett and Pendleton West often present informal displays of studio course work in progress.
Studios Areas:
Only currently enrolled students in art classes have access to the classroom, lab, darkroom facilities and equipment. Most facilties have 24 hour access to enrolled students, but after hours it is important you work in JAC and PNW with a buddy.
Art Library:
The Wellesley College Art Library provides collections and services covering the fine arts, architecture, classical archaeology, decorative arts, photography and filmmaking.
Visual Resources:

The Office of Advising and Academic Support Services brings together a range of resources to assist all Wellesley students in meeting their academic and personal goals. The office includes the Class Deans for each of the four Wellesley classes as well as the advising and student support resources included in the Pforzheimer Learning and Teaching Center. The Office works closely with other groups in the Division of Student Life as well as with faculty and staff across the campus to help each Wellesley student make the most of her time here.

The majority of Wellesley College students live in college residence halls, making them a vital part of Wellesley's learning environment. The residence hall system fosters a sense of community through student self-government and program planning. All residence halls have both cooking and laundry facilities. For the health and comfort of our students, employees, and guests, smoking is not permitted in the residence halls.
