Yale University

Since the mid-twentieth century, Yale has been a leader in the integration of the practice of painting, sculpture, photography, design, and new media into both undergraduate and graduate curricula.

The commitment of the School of Art to the rigorous fusion of thinking and making—in a context in which superb resources in other disciplines are available to aspiring artists—has made it a magnet for the most talented young people from around the world. Starting in the 1960s with the arrival of Bauhaus master Josef Albers, the School has likewise attracted an unrivaled faculty. In addition, visiting lecturers have included a cross section of the creators and critics who have set the course of visual art during the last five decades. Indeed, many who attended the School of Art have gone on to join the front ranks of that groundbreaking company.

With a constant flow of speakers, new facilities for all mediums, a new exhibition space for contemporary art, and events and programs developed in collaboration with the Yale University Art Gallery and other arts departments, the School of Art offers students, the... [ Read All ]

Information For  International Students
http://www.yale.edu/admit/international/index.html

International students (not counting U.S. citizens and permanent residents educated abroad) make up 9% of the undergraduate enrollment at Yale, and they come from 70 different countries outside the United States. International enrollments have doubled under Yale's current president, Richard Levin, as the University seeks to further diversify an already multicultural college with students judged to be the most outstanding in their home countries. International students find Yale appealing because of its emphasis on undergraduate teaching; the intense involvement that characterizes student activities on campus, both academic and extracurricular; research opportunities, especially in the sciences and engineering; and the University's long tradition of instruction in the liberal arts, when university-level education in one's home country can seem prematurely professional and less personal.

Accommodation
Yale's residential college system, now more than seventy years old, is perhaps the most distinctive feature of the College. The residential colleges allow students to experience the cohesiveness and intimacy of a small school while still enjoying the cultural and scholarly resources of a large university, fostering spirit, allegiance, and a sense of community.

Before freshman year, all incoming undergraduates are randomly assigned to one of Yale's twelve residential colleges. Students remain affiliated with their residential college for all four years (and beyond). Yale makes every effort to represent, on the level of the college, the diversity of the entire undergraduate community. In this sense each college is a microcosm of the larger student population. The residential college system offers students a familiar, comfortable living environment, personal interaction with faculty members and administrators, and exciting opportunities for academic and extracurricular exploration.

How To Apply
Entrance requirements:

The School of Art requires for admission a high degree of capability and commitment. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or a diploma from a four-year accredited professional art school. Admission to the School of Art is on a highly selective and competitive basis.

Admission
Students are admitted only in September of each year. The admissions committee’s decisions on preliminary selection are mailed in mid-February and final selection decisions are mailed in mid-April. No decision can be given over the telephone or the Internet. To apply for more than one area of concentration, separate applications, fees, and supporting documentation must be filed. The work submitted should be representative of the applicant’s experience in that particular field.

Application files are maintained for a period of two years and reapplicants are advised to correspond with the director of academic affairs prior to submitting a new application to avoid unnecessary duplication of supporting documents. The minimum requirement for reapplicants is a new application form with...[ Read All ]
