Introduction - Purchase College, SUNY School of Art Design

Artists and designers are keenly conscious of the primordial conversation between person and place. Can you visualize yourself giving shape to your own dreams, living at the intersection of urban geometry and pastoral landscape, at the grassy edge of the art capital of the world?

Purchase’s School of the Arts, comprised of the School of Art+Design and the Conservatories of Dance, Music, and Theatre Arts and Film as well as its accomplished faculty in Humanities, Social Science and Natural Sciences is distinctive among other colleges in the country.

In 1966 the rigorous modernist lines of a campus for thousands of students were etched upon 500 acres of wooded pasture. Construction began on the campus in 1967, and the College's first commencement was held in 1973. Today, Purchase has an enrollment of approximately 3,900 students drawn from 42 states and 27 countries. Purchase’s influence as an artistic and intellectual center with a national and international reputation is due to its distinctive academic programs, its faculty and more than 14,000 alumni who are major contributors to education, science, business, the arts and entertainment. Graduates include Oscar, Emmy, and Tony Award winners, research scientists, CEOs of international corporations, prominent journalists, academics, teachers and MacArthur Genius Award winners. Among the current faculty are Guggenheim, Fulbright and other national award winners. Click the following link to continue reading: http://www.purchase.edu/AboutPurchase/History.aspx
