The Bene Israel Family
2006
Acrylic and iron oxides on canvas
229 x 396 cm |
Gupta’s portrait of the Bene Israel Family is a thoroughly engaging examination of the past. The Bene Israel were a group of Jewish emigrants who settled in Mumbai and Karachi at the turn of the century and were coined the Pakistani Jews. Under British rule, many of the Bene Israeli community rose to prominence and thrived on the new opportunities sanctioned by the British. Gupta’s painting appears to be far from a resolved work, as the figures soften into the canvas and seem to merge into the background. This work displays the artist’s ongoing examination of identity and social history. |
