Free Passage is another of Gupta’s complex paintings. Likened to Pablo Picasso’s 1937 painting Guernica, Gupta’s figures appear in black and white with text painted over them in an act of protest. The forms appear on the brink of dissolving, as colour disappears from the foreground and becomes rooted into the distance.
