Reena Saini Kallat is preoccupied with the plight of the socially marginalised and works in a number of mediums including video, installation, photography and painting. Penumbra Passage (Canine Cases) uses images that the artist has sourced from the internet and painted onto canvas. Hung above display vitrines, these portraits of ordinary people are set in ornamental frames. The stained colour that forms by their mouth resembles, in both works, the shape of the Pakistani controlled area of Kashmir, referencing disputed territory and conflict. The velvet dusty cases below the portraits contain miniature marble carved weapons arranged to resemble an open mouth. The artist has expressed an interest in how violence has historically been legitimized by aestheticising the means of destruction, such as colonial weaponry and heraldry. Like a dated museum piece, Penumbra Passage appears to have a provocative social-political undertone, as the work delivers an unsettled tribute to the dead. |
