Placing themselves in Renaissance tradition, Muntean & Rosenblum make cartoons of their major works. Shunning silver-point and charcoal for pencil and acrylic, Muntean & Rosenblum’s end results show the subtle changes of character and the rationalising of composition, the first drafts of a masterpiece. In Muntean & Rosenblum’s finished works, the texts are presented as self-authored philosophy. Here, the skeleton of their composition is shown: worthy phrases and lines stolen from novels and magazine articles at random are pasted together like a poetic ransom note. |

Markus Muntean and Adi Rosenblum, who live in Vienna, have been collaborating since 1992 in the art business. Their work concerns itself with traditional genre limits both from a media and methodical point of view, inasmuch as these are in the process of shifting, overlapping and dissolving. Painting forms one of the focal points of their artistic production, but one that eschews traditional classification and does not conform to academic criteria or, indeed, those of an avant-garde notion of anti-painting..

Recently I met with a well-scrubbed guy in a bright-blue shirt who had a shiny new pencil, also blue, tucked jauntily behind his ear. Something about him struck me as odd, and later I realized that he was mimicking, albeit in a different color, the pink-shirted and be-penciled Banana Republic model then appearing on bus shelters all over the city. Of course it's obvious that we're awash in a sea of images that dictate how we look, act, and think (though most of us don't take the cues so literally), and it's equally obvious that these images are mostly shallow, bereft of meaning. Muntean/Rosenblum rather soberly accept this status quo as the starring point in their work, appropriating material from a panoply of fashion and lifestyle magazines, homing in on comely youths posing moodily in trendy clothing--patterned shifts, cargo pants, and the latest sneaker and T-shirt styles.
