Work of art I would like to make
My previous works covered themes of identity within cultural and social contexts, paying particular interest at the role of media as, contemporarily and increasingly, television and the internet play a proactive role in the formation of identity, by projecting a view of the world upon individuals. This view may be seen as a means of power: a power to manipulate opinion, of freedom of speech, a means to self-discovery and change, or simply a projection of the nature of a society at a particular point in time. Innovation or containment? Or all of the above?
My project for a new big 4 consists of covering the existing structure with enamel plaques of the three primary colours: yellow, red and blue. The use of the primary colours is, therefore, a reflection of how basic elements are at the base, from which all others are dependent and consequent from, and of the adaptability of the delivery (and role) of media in society. It is, not only a metaphor of a consequence of events but also a reminder of its place, from a very young age.
The use of a shiny material should enable the reflection of the space surrounding the structure. It furthers the dichotomy of media as a means of formation but also as a mirror of contemporary society, broadcasting and pursuing what appeals to the viewer: a means of formation as well as pleasure and immediate satisfaction. By placing the space, viewer and symbol within the same frame, it will enable people to fully understand the impact of their choices in the world around them. The cycle of Mankind, development and choice is united and continuous… Additionally, and most importantly, all of the above questions will still remain unanswered, hanging in the air, and the viewer may then make decisions (or not) with a new view of the world.
