Technical InformationThe structure reflects the highly successful on screen ident, where one single viewpoint reveals the '4' mark. The design and hollow 'biscuit cutter' form of the structure lends itself most obviously to wrapping and filling. However, the impressive nature of the structure, spreading 12.5m deep, covering the entire piazza in front of the building, provides opportunities to create a far more immersive experience. The high volume of people entering and leaving the building at all times in addition to those passing by, should all be able to enjoy a rich sensory experience as they pass through the arch of the Big 4 form. The structure is a braced steel frame of 18m height with thin sheet steel cladding upon temporary foundations. Any necessary fixings will be lead by the design of the intervention. Structural limitations will to some extent restrict the weight and size of proposals. Data and power will be provided to the site but limitations will apply. Light, Sound and Movement will be subject to statutory restrictions. The final build of the successful design will be subject to obtaining Planning Consent. The architects, FreeState, who designed the project, and engineers Atelier One, will assist with design and delivery issues, as appropriate. Each of the nine objects of the supporting structure of the Big 4 are completely hollow from front to back when seen from the front (Horseferry Road) elevation. The supporting structure of the Big 4 has a footprint which is as deep as it is wide revealing a 9m high arch through the centre of a complex and intriguing three dimensional form. |
