For the last couple of years the Japanese designer Comme des Garcons has been setting up 'guerrilla stores' around the world from Hong Kong to Cologne to Reykjavik. Collaborations with artists such as Johannes Wohnseifer and unusual, off-the-beaten-track venues have made these fashion 'squats' hip, happening places for those in the know.
According to Comme des Garcons's press release, 'The idea behind the guerrilla stores is to present to the local population an array of interesting and creative merchandise in a new way, that is not beholden to seasons, or other industry dictates, and where what counts is the choice of goods and the spirit and the energy, rather than the appearance of carefully designed interiors.'
The latest guerrilla store opened last month in Glasgow in an old wedding car workshop. Pieces have been created specially for the store, and you can also find a range of other Comme des Garcons products hanging cheek-by-jowl with engine parts. Scottish artist Jim Lambie has even given one of the cars a make-over with a vibrant Paisley pattern - also for sale. The not-for-profit store is being run by local artist Mutley and sound engineer George Matheson, and any money made over the next 12 months will go towards fund neighbouring recording and art studio spaces.
