Working in my studio is usually never done in quiet contemplation, as I seem to be dependent on some kind of sound to get going.
Normally I will listen to the radio while doing office work or routine work like scanning negatives. I guess this kind of practical work produces the need for some sort of entertainment, like people talking about everything from the discovery of new fossils in China to gossip from the Cannes festival.
When doing more creative work, music is the preferred medium, usually tendencing towards quirky pop or electronica. During my last project - named Sun City - Goldfrapp, Tosca, Mùm, Pizzikato Five, Cibo Matto and The Sea and the Cake were on heavy rotation. I normally don't use music to boost the creative process or to get new ideas, rather it seems to be a medium which underlines or illustrates what I am working on at that specific moment.
However, today I am listening to the Gilles Peterson show on BBC Radio One on the internet, which is what I often do when I am tired of my own cds.
As for when I'm out there in the "real world", photographing, I don't listen to any music, or the radio for that matter, as I want to be able to absorb the mood and the essence of the place or the people I am photographing.
