from the Munnings series
The most comprehensive exhibition of British artist Keith Coventry's painting to date brings together several of his painting series, including the Albany, White Abstracts, and Estate series, and showcases works which have never been seen by the public before.
Keith Coventry is best known for his white on white paintings from the 1990s which were included in the 'Sensation' exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1998. His abstract and narrative paintings contrast a powerful surface allure with the derelict, the degraded, the decay and decline of their subject matter. In January of this year Coventry showed eight of his white on white paintings, based on hunting scenes by Alfred Munnings, at the Fine Art Society in London, paintings which at first glance seemed to epitomise modernism, and yet on closer inspection Coventry's renderings of hunting scenes in thick white paint were quite literally capturing a traditional British past-time in decline. The exhibition was called, appropriately enough, 'Endangered Species.'
Keith Coventry studied at Chelsea School of Art and has exhibited his work widely in the UK and Europe. His work is included in collections all over the world including that of the British Council, the Arts Council of England, the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Walker Art Centre, Minneapolis.
Keith Coventry will be discussing his work with writer John Calcutt on Friday 18 Aug at 2pm - admission is free.
