Here is a statement from Eileen Quinlan about her new body of work, about to be unveiled at Sutton Lane, London
'I'm interested in the false transparency of the photographic image. It's not a window, but a mirror. To force an engagement with the surface of this illusion, to resist its easy narrativization, I employ crude alienation effects. Color, atmosphere, time, composition, description are reduced to their most basic forms. The process of building images with a limited set of materials is illustrated, serving to further highlight the photograph's constructed nature. The constructions themselves take many forms, from the quasi-pictorial to the semi-abstract, from the evidentiary document to the expressive collage. Produced via the most common tricks of the commercial photo studio trade, the "Smoke & Mirrors"
pictures are straighforward still-life photographs, unmanipulated in the darkroom or through digital craft. Despite the tightly controlled circumstances of their making, they remain contingent where the smoke itself is concerned, a last vestige of the photograph's necessary submission to chance, to the event.'
