Wolfgang Tillmans, Suzanne & Lutz, white dress, army skirt, 1993
On 17 September Wolfgang Tillmans will be in conversation with Mark Wigley at the Hammer, an event which marks the opening of the German photographer's first retrospective in the US. One of the most distinctive artists to emerge in the 1990s, Tillmans' photographs capture the intimate, often overlooked, moments of everyday life. His work, ranging from portraits of friends and photographs of landscapes and cityscapes to abstract explorations of colour, challenge traditional notions of hierarchy and beauty. The title of his exhibition at Tate Britain in 2003, "if one thing matters, everything matters", neatly sums up Tillmans' photographic vision: a bunch of keys, the inside of a cupboard, the solar eclipse and a pub urinal are all deserving of equal attention.
The exhibition at the Hammer will present 300 works by Tillmans including a video piece and photographs drawn from his entire career. The work will be installed by Tillmans himself whose characteristically casual arrangement of his prints inspires a variety of physical and emotional relationships with the viewer as well as creating a distinctive palette.
