Ed Harper, Leighton Ave, 2006.
For his one-person exhibition at BEARSPACE, Ed Harper shows paintings of piles of household rubbish put out for collection. Harper focuses on graphics and logos represented on cardboard boxes and plastic bags; the material of our consumer society. These paintings are as graphic as the logotypes they depict in flat, sharp edged and syrupy colour.
Formal concerns are central in Harper's paintings, where composition and colour are critical. His images of refuse sacks, boxes and rubbish - haphazard gatherings of soon to be disposed of stuff - are pictured as aesthetically pleasing street assemblages. These seductive surfaces also relate to questions of commodity, consumerism and art, applying a slick sheen over the otherwise decaying corners of our urban experience.
