Rob Pruitt, IDEA NO. 9: 'Instead of storing pennies in a jar, toss them
into a pile on the floor', 1999, $30 of brand new pennies,
self-adhesive wall text, dimensions variable
Rob Pruitt is undoubtedly best-known for his Cocaine Buffet, 1998, in which the artist installed a long mirror lined with the illicit substance at an opening in New York. Wagering that the drugs wouldn't last the evening, Pruitt's gambit paid off and he quickly achieved notoriety as a provocateur, a reputation consolidated by his satirical 101 Art Ideas You Can Do Yourself of 1999. At Gavin Brown Enterprises in 2001, Pruitt let the art world in on his relentless fascination with pandas and glitter. Yes, Pruitt was now a kitsch aficionado of Koonsian proportions. Last seen at Gavin Brown earlier this autumn, Pruitt returns to Air de Paris on 2 December alongside Mïrka Lugosi.
Lugosi mainly produces drawings, gouaches, polaroids and other manually or digitally altered photographs, and has long been known as one of France's leading illustrators. The audience for her S&M-inflected graphic work has, naturally, expanded in line with the growing mainstream acceptance of fetishistic sexual practices, and Lugosi has published her drawings in book form, in a volume titled 'Mademoiselle'. This Paris outing will be an excellent chance to see her darkly humorous, dreamlike compositions in the flesh.
